Supported Independent Living
A home you share with other participants, with our team there around the clock. Not a facility, not a placement — a house, with housemates, and support that never clocks off.
Who it's for
People who need support at all times of the day, or for most of it, and who want to live in a real home rather than a clinical setting. Most of the people we support in SIL live with a small number of other participants, with our team on site 24 hours a day.
What's included
- 24/7 support from our team — someone is always there, day and night
- Personal care, medication, meals, household tasks and getting out into the community
- A regular team who know you — not whoever an agency sent that day
- Nursing oversight, including for complex and high-intensity needs
- Support to build the skills you want to build, at the pace you want to build them
What this looks like day to day
Someone might get support with personal care and breakfast in the morning, head out to a program or to work, come home to a house with people in it, cook dinner with a support worker, and know that if something happens at 3am there is a person awake in the house who knows them.
Where this usually sits in a plan
Typically funded under Core Supports (Assistance with Daily Life) as a Supported Independent Living line item, based on how much support you need and how it is shared with the people you live with.
General information only. Your support coordinator, plan manager or the NDIA can tell you what your own plan actually covers — we deliberately don’t advise on that.
A house, not a facility
The thing families worry about with SIL usually isn’t the support. It’s whether their person is going to end up somewhere that feels institutional — where the staff room is the real centre of the house, where the day runs to a roster rather than to the people living there, and where visitors feel like they’re intruding.
That’s the thing we work hardest to avoid. Our team is in someone’s home; they aren’t running a unit. It’s a distinction that shows up in small things — whose music is on, who decides what’s for dinner, whether the TV is on because someone wants it or because it fills the silence.
Registered for SIL — and held to the new standards
From 1 July 2026, every provider delivering Supported Independent Living must be registered with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission and meet the new SIL Practice Standards, developed with Inclusion Australia alongside people with disability.
Those standards are built around the voice, rights and freedoms of participants — including a dedicated Supported Decision Making standard, which is about making sure the person living in the house is the one making decisions about their life, with support, rather than having decisions made for them.
Lionheart holds SIL registration. If you’re comparing providers, asking to see it is entirely reasonable — and since July it hasn’t been optional for anyone.

A vacancy is only worth filling if the match is right. Ring (07) 4910 8777 and tell us about the person, and we’ll be straight with you about whether we think the house suits them — including when the answer is no.
Frequently asked questions
Who would I be living with?
Usually a small number of other participants. This is the question that matters most and it deserves a real answer, so we don't rush it — we look at whether the people in a house actually suit each other, not just whether there's a spare room. If a match isn't right, we'll say so.
Does 24/7 mean someone is awake overnight?
There is always someone in the house. Whether that's an active overnight shift or a sleepover depends on the needs of the people living there, and it's set out in your plan.
How many different support workers will I see?
More than you might hope, and we'd rather be straight about that. Covering a house 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, takes a sizeable team — some of our houses have 15 or more workers across the roster. Anyone claiming a handful of people can cover round-the-clock care is either not doing round-the-clock care or not telling you the whole story. What we can promise is that they're your team, not a rotating agency list: regular faces, proper handover between them, and a photo and introduction before anyone new starts.
Is it still my home?
Yes. It's a house, not a facility. You choose how your room looks, what you do with your day, when you have people over, and what you eat. Our team works in your home — you don't live in our workplace.
What if I don't get on with a housemate?
You tell us, and we take it seriously. Living with people is hard sometimes, and pretending otherwise helps nobody. Sometimes it's something we can work through together; sometimes the honest answer is that the house isn't right, and we'll help you look at options.
Can I choose who supports me?
We match support workers to your preferences and needs, and keep your team as consistent as we can. Before any new worker starts with you, we send you a staff profile — their photo and a short introduction — so the first shift isn't a stranger at the door.
How is SIL different from Specialist Disability Accommodation?
SIL funds the support you receive. SDA funds the home itself — built or modified for higher support needs. They're separate things, usually from separate providers. Lionheart delivers the support; we're not an SDA housing provider.
Is Lionheart registered to deliver SIL?
Yes. Since 1 July 2026 all SIL providers have had to be registered with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission and comply with the SIL Practice Standards. Lionheart holds SIL registration alongside a number of other registration groups.
Do you have a vacancy right now?
Current vacancies are listed further down this page. If nothing there suits, ring us anyway — availability changes, and we'd rather know what you're looking for before a room comes up than after.
