Careers at Lionheart

We are always taking applications for support workers — not just when a position comes up. Below: what the work actually looks like, what you’ll need, and how to register your interest.

Why our team stays

Lionheart started because we couldn't find support workers willing to be trained for our daughter's complex needs — so we trained and employed our own. That founding belief still shapes how we hire: we invest properly in training, we build consistent teams around each participant, and we treat our staff the same way we ask them to treat the people we support — with dignity and the right to thrive.

  • Training delivered by our own Registered Nurses, including complex and clinical care
  • You can call the office or the on-call phone at any hour and reach a real person
  • Flexible rostering — we work around your availability, not the other way around
  • Consistent teams matched to participants over time
  • Family-owned and family-operated, not a distant corporate structure

“I love that I can call the office or the on-call phone at any time of the day or night if I need support — it makes me feel reassured and backed up no matter what situation I'm in.”

Support Workers — always open

We are always taking applications for support workers. Not "when a position becomes available" — always. Good support workers are the whole business, and we would rather meet you now than miss you.

That includes people new to the sector. Several of our team started straight out of a Certificate III and were supported into it.

The hours

What the work actually looks like

Worth knowing before you apply, because support work doesn’t run nine to five and pretending otherwise wastes everybody’s time.

Short shifts
Two to three hours, often a community access run
Standard shifts
Six to eight hours in a SIL home or one-to-one
Sleepovers
You’re on site overnight with a bed, paid an allowance, available if needed
Active nights
Awake and working — some people need support all night
Weekends and public holidays
Penalty rates apply under the SCHADS Award
Split shifts
A morning and an evening with a break between

You tell us your availability and we roster to it. Plenty of our team work around school hours, study, or another job. What we ask is that once a shift is yours, the person expecting you can count on it.

Pay and conditions are under the SCHADS Award (MA000100).

From the team

What it's actually like to work here

These are unedited, from our people.

“There has never been a time where I have felt like I was an inconvenience or ‘just a number’. I have not felt any job stress since working at Lionheart.”

Lionheart support worker

“Lionheart truly cares — not just about ticking boxes, but about people. I reached out to the team and the response was immediate and genuine.”

Lionheart support worker

“They have given me the opportunity to be both a present mum and to contribute financially for my family — something I am incredibly grateful for.”

When another provider closed, we took on their people

A local provider shut down at short notice. We were asked whether we could help the families and support workers left stranded — and we did, so that nobody lost their care or their job.

“Without hesitation, they stepped up and moved heaven and earth to ensure no one went unsupported or lost their job. It's something I will never be able to thank them enough for.”

One of our managers started as a Lionheart family

Someone who first came to us as a family receiving supports is now part of the management team.

“From starting out as a Lionheart family for supports to now being part of the management team, it's truly been a privilege. A special thank you to Brett and Ellie for letting me be unapologetically ME!”

What you’ll need

None of this has to be sorted before you talk to us — tell us where you’re up to and we’ll help you get the rest. Some of it we can point you straight at; some of it we run in-house.

Checks and clearances

  • NDIS Worker Screening Check — required for all risk-assessed roles. Applied for through Queensland’s Worker Screening unit; we can walk you through it.
  • Blue Card (working with children) — required if you’ll support anyone under 18.
  • NDIS Worker Orientation Module — “Quality, Safety and You”. Free, online, about 90 minutes.
  • Driver’s licence and a roadworthy car — most roles involve getting people places.

Training

  • First Aid and CPR — current certificates. CPR needs renewing annually.
  • Manual handling and, where the role needs it, positive behaviour support — we have a qualified Maybo trainer on staff.
  • Participant-specific clinical training — delivered by our own Registered Nurses, for the individual you’ll be supporting, so you start knowing what you’re doing rather than working it out on shift.

No qualification in disability? Not a barrier. Several of our best support workers came from hospitality, retail and mining. What we can’t train is whether you turn up.

Stuck on any of it? Call (07) 4910 8777 and ask for our Compliance team — they do this all week and would rather help you than watch you give up on the paperwork.

Frequently asked questions

I have no experience in disability. Should I still apply?

Yes. Some of the best support workers we have came from hospitality, retail, mining and aged care. We can train skills. We can’t train whether somebody turns up, or whether they treat people properly.

What if I don’t have my checks yet?

Apply anyway and tell us where you’re up to. Our Compliance team helps people through the NDIS Worker Screening Check and the orientation module every week. It’s not a reason to wait.

Do I have to do sleepovers or night shifts?

No. You tell us the availability you can genuinely commit to and we roster to it. Some of our team never do a night shift; others prefer them.

Is the work casual, part-time or permanent?

All three, depending on the role and what suits you.

How are you different to other providers to work for?

Two things people mention. Consistent teams — you support the same people rather than a different house every shift. And clinical backup: our own nurses train you on the individual you’re supporting, so you’re not guessing.

Will I be supported if something goes wrong on shift?

Yes. You have a coordinator who knows you and the person you support, an on-call number that a real person answers, and our nursing team is reachable on any shift.

What happens after I submit the form?

It reaches our recruitment team, who will contact you about next steps.

Do you take students or people on placement?

Yes, as time and needs allow. Get in touch and tell us what your placement requires and when it needs to happen, and we’ll let you know honestly whether we can host it.

How to apply

Start with an email

There’s no online application form to fill in. Email us your résumé and a cover letter, and we’ll come back to you about what happens next.

office@lionheart.care

Attach your résumé and a cover letter, and tell us which role you’re interested in — support work, nursing, coordination, or something else. The cover letter doesn’t need to be long; we mostly want to know why this work, and what you’re looking for.

Would rather talk to a person first? Ring (07) 4910 8777 and say you’re interested in support work. Any hour.
