What this looks like day to day

A participant might be supported to attend a weekly art class, do their own grocery shopping with guidance, and build toward catching public transport independently.

Where this usually sits in a plan

Typically funded under Core Supports (Assistance with Daily Life and/or Social & Community Participation).

General information only. Your support coordinator, plan manager or the NDIA can tell you what your own plan actually covers — we deliberately don’t advise on that.

An ordinary afternoon

Mostly it looks like this

A park, a swing, someone alongside you. Community access isn’t a program with a curriculum — it’s getting out of the house and being somewhere, with support that makes that possible.

Some people are working toward catching the bus on their own. Others are here because being out in the world beats being in a room. Both are the point.

Where community access actually goes

The plan says “social and community participation”. In practice it’s the playground, craft at the table, the Christmas lights in December, and being there for a celebration.

“Since being supported by Lionheart I've come a lot further and feel like I have more confidence. I can now talk to people out in the community. I feel like I can stand up for myself — I feel like I couldn't do this before.”

Participant who moved to Lionheart from another provider

“Lionheart have helped me live more independently. They have also helped me achieve goals like grocery shopping, meal prep and cleaning. Lionheart helping me at my job has helped build my confidence.”

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same as Lionheart's Programs?

Related but different — Community Access is one-to-one, individualised support. Programs are group social and recreational activities, many of which run from our Tank Street site.

Can this support work goals, not just social goals?

Yes, where it's included in your plan — talk to us about what's possible.

What if leaving the house feels impossible right now?

Then we start smaller than that, and we go at your pace. Several of the people we support began exactly there.

Do you provide transport?

Yes — Lionheart holds NDIS registration for Assistance with Travel/Transport, so transport can be built into your supports where your plan funds it. Talk to us about what that looks like day to day.
