Therapeutic counselling in Gladstone

A Lionheart service, with its own room, its own front door and its own name.

A Lionheart service, run separately on purpose

Brave Minds Counselling is ours. Same organisation, same ABN, same people behind it — and a deliberately separate name, address and website.

The separation is deliberate. Counselling works best when the room feels like it belongs to you, not to your provider. You can walk into Brave Minds without walking past your support workers, and what you say in there stays in there.

You do not need to be a Lionheart participant to see a counsellor at Brave Minds. Anyone in Gladstone can book.

The room

It looks like a lounge room, on purpose

Two armchairs, a couch, a rug, a lamp and a window. There are books and a few soft things on the shelf for anyone who wants something to hold.

Nobody talks well in a clinic. If you’ve been to appointments where you sat across a desk from someone taking notes, this is deliberately not that.

It’s at Herbert Street, in town — not at either Lionheart office.

Meet the counsellor

Stacey Mossman

Therapeutic Counsellor

Stacey is the counsellor you’ll see at Brave Minds. She’s registered with the Australian Counselling Association and works with children, adolescents and adults.

In her words, on reaching out: “Seeking help can be a challenging step for many people.” The room, and the way a first session runs, are set up around that.

What they work with

What people come in with

A broad range, and there is no threshold you have to reach before it counts as worth talking about.

Anxiety and panic
Depression and mood
Trauma
Grief and loss
Stress and burnout
Anger and reactivity
Relationship and family conflict
Separation, redundancy, retirement
Self-esteem and confidence
Adjusting to life changes
Neurodiverse challenges, including ASD
Psychosocial disability

Approaches include cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), person-centred therapy, solution-focused brief therapy, behavioural therapy and trauma-informed care.

Paying for it

Brave Minds accepts NDIS funding — self-managed, plan-managed or NDIA-managed. Counselling commonly sits under Improved Daily Living in a plan.

Brave Minds does not bulk bill. Fees are set out on their site, and it is worth asking about them before your first session rather than after.

As always, we won’t tell you what your plan should cover — we get paid from it. Your plan manager or support coordinator is the right person for that question.

Counselling is not psychology

Worth knowing before you book, because the two get used interchangeably and they are not the same thing.

A counsellor works with you on what you are going through — how you feel, how you cope, what you want to change. Brave Minds counsellors are ACA-registered with a graduate degree.

A psychologist is registered with AHPRA and can do things a counsellor cannot, including formal diagnosis and some Medicare-rebated treatment. If that is what you need, Brave Minds will say so rather than take the booking.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be a Lionheart participant?

No. Brave Minds is open to anyone in Gladstone. Plenty of people who see a counsellor there have no other connection to Lionheart at all.

Do I need a referral?

No. You can book directly — no GP referral, no mental health care plan, no waiting for someone else to make the call.

Will my support workers know what I talk about?

No. Brave Minds keeps its own clinical records, separate from your Lionheart support file. Nothing goes back to your support team unless you ask for it, or unless there is a risk to someone’s safety — the same limit that applies to any counselling anywhere.

Can I use my NDIS funding?

Yes — self-managed, plan-managed or NDIA-managed, all three. Counselling usually sits under Improved Daily Living. Check with your plan manager or support coordinator about what your plan covers.

How much does it cost?

Brave Minds does not bulk bill. Current fees are on their website, or ask when you call — better to know up front.

Is there anything to do before my first appointment?

Yes. Registration and onboarding forms need to be completed at least 48 hours before your session. Brave Minds will send them through when you book.

Do they work with children?

Yes — children, adolescents and adults.

What if I can’t wait for an appointment?

If you are in crisis, please don’t wait for a counselling appointment. Call Lifeline on 13 11 14 or 000 if someone is in immediate danger. Brave Minds can pick things up once you are safe.
