it doesn’t matter what you look like; how you communicate; or what you can and cannot do. Acceptance is unconditional and you are seen for the incredible human being that you are. There’s no behaviour too ‘out there’ and no need that is ‘too much’. Wherever you’re at, you’ll be met at your level; and wherever you want to go, there’ll be someone there to walk with you. This place is a community of belonging where every person of every ability feels connected and leads a meaningful life. This is our vision for Lionheart.

Right to thrive…

Access to a quality life is a human right. We understand that a quality life is not just about getting basic needs met – food, shelter, water – but also entails the things that are fundamental to a quality life: the freedom to make your own decisions about your own life; the ability to participate and contribute in meaningful ways to your community; to learn and grow; and always, feel safe and secure in your home, workplace and community. At Lionheart we believe EVERYONE has this right: young, old, care givers, clients, employees.

Whatever it takes…

Whatever it takes means that we are willing to do Whatever. It. Takes. to support positive outcomes for our clients. The world of disability is not always fair and equal, and it certainly isn’t always pretty. Sometimes it takes an incredible amount of grit and resilience to battle through the red tape, prejudice, and ignorance that exist as barriers to living your best life. We recognise that sometimes you have to dig deep and access a level of fierce advocacy you never knew existed. It also requires problem solving and a stubbornness to never give up. We know this and we are here to go ‘all in’ for those who need it.

Green and growing…

Just like a sapling, life is about tapping into sources of knowledge and understanding that gives you the strength to grow. Life is not just about existing, it is about achieving goals and learning new skills. At Lionheart it doesn’t matter whether you’re young or old, a client or employee, we aim to provide everyone with as much opportunity to learn and grow, however that looks, and whatever that means to you.

Stronger together…

Living with a disability is a hard thing. Caring for someone with a disability is a hard thing. This doesn’t need to be something that you go through alone. Lionheart is a community where you will find those who may not be able to walk your walk, but will always walk beside you. It is together that we become stronger and more able to do these hard things.

Making the world a better place

Diversity is a superpower

The spectrum of human diversity is not just something to be merely tolerated. Diversity is a beautiful thing that gives our world colour and meaning. For too long our society has taught us that if we cannot fit perfectly into the box of norms and conventions predicated by our ‘mainstream’ schools, and reinforced in our ‘mainstream’ society, then we don’t belong.

 

For too long those who have struggled and failed to fit in these boxes have then learnt to live on the edges – as much as possible invisible to the world. Well…newsflash: THE BOX SUCKS. Not everyone fits in a box, and that’s a GOOD thing. We don’t need a world where people are supported to ‘fix their faults’. A world of perfectly even boxes might look great on a factory floor, but it is not a world that anyone wants to actually live in. 

 

We need a world that makes space for triangles, circles and odd shaped polygons. This world is rich, vibrant, and meaningful. It is only through learning to value diversity, that this becomes possible. This is why diversity isn’t just a nice idea, it is a SUPERPOWER that makes the world a better place.
